Local, Distortional, and Euler Buckling of Thin-Walled Columns

چکیده
Open cross-section, thin-walled, cold-formed steel columns have at least three competing buckling modes: local, distortional, and Euler ~i.e., flexural or flexural-torsional! buckling. Closed-form prediction of the buckling stress in the local mode, including interaction of the connected elements, and the distortional mode, including consideration of the elastic and geometric stiffness at the web/flange juncture, are provided and shown to agree well with numerical methods. Numerical analyses and experiments indicate postbuckling capacity in the distortional mode is lower than in the local mode. Current North American design specifications for cold-formed steel columns ignore local buckling interaction and do not provide an explicit check for distortional buckling. Existing experiments on cold-formed channel, zed, and rack columns indicate inconsistency and systematic error in current design methods and provide validation for alternative methods. A new method is proposed for design that explicitly incorporates local, distortional and Euler buckling, does not require calculations of effective width and/or effective properties, gives reliable predictions devoid of systematic error, and provides a means to introduce rational analysis for elastic buckling prediction into the design of thin-walled columns. Strength Design Curves for Thin-Walled Sections Undergoing Distortional Buckling
Certain types of cold-formed sections, notably those composed of high-strength steel, some decking sections and racking sections may undergo a mode of buckling called distortional in which edge and intermediate stiffeners are inadequate to prevent lateral movement of the flanges which they support. The existing design methods in current standards and specifications are often not adequate to acc...

Pultruded composite structural members with open or closed thin-walled sections are being extensively used as columns for structural applications l1Jhere buckling is the main consideration in the design. In this paper, global buckling is investigated and critical loads are experimentally determined for various fiber reinforced composite I-beams of long column length. Southwell's method is used ...
متن کاملStress Gradient Effect on the Buckling of Thin Plates
This paper presents an analytical method to calculate the buckling stress of a rectangular thin plate under nonuniform applied axial stresses. Two cases are considered, buckling of a plate simply supported on all four sides and buckling of a plate simply supported on three sides with one unloaded edge free and the opposite unloaded edge rotationally restrained. These two cases illustrate the in...

The results of several perforated steel thin-walled U-shaped sections subject to compression are presented. The ultimate strength obtained from experimental tests is compared to the one obtained from numerical simulation by finite element method. The experimental tests were carried out according to the standard 10.2.02 of the FEM. The meshing, loading, boundary conditions for supports, geometri...

This paper is concerned with the inelastic behavior of axially loaded concrete-filled thin-walled steel tubular columns subjected to local buckling. A nonlinear fiber element analysis program accounting for local buckling effects is developed for predicting the ultimate strength and ductility of concrete-filled thin-walled steel tubular columns. The effects of local buckling are taken into cons...
